About iQ&A Glycemic Regulation

The Interactive Medical Intelligence Zone is a needs assessment-driven continuing medical education (CME) activity that utilizes national and international experts to provide evidence-based, guideline-consistent, and practice behavior-changing information focused on critical and challenging topics in clinical medicine.
To ensure that the educational content of iQ&A programs will address practice gaps in clinical medicine, improve patient outcomes, and positively guide clinical practice strategies, international experts, usually in a roundtable format, will respond to questions submitted and/or generated by practitioners at CME mega-symposia, national congress, association meetings, or as part of on-line, enduring CME programs.
Questions reflecting the clinical needs of practitioners are then answered, analyzed, and discussed by international experts, who provide evidence-based and clinically relevant guidance that is independently of commercial sources or the program sponsor..

Method of Physician Participation Utilized in Learning Process

There are no fees for participating and receiving CME credit for this activity. During the period August 22, 2016 through August 22, 2018, participants must 1) read the learning objectives and faculty disclosures; 2) study the educational activity, and are expected to view all 91 segments, totaling 3 hours and 30 minutes, to successfully complete the activity and earn CME credit; 3) register and complete the evaluation form and post-test; 4) score 100% on the post-test; and 5) print out CME certificate.

Estimated Time to Complete Educational Activity

3.0 hours. Physicians must study the enduring activity, and are expected to view every segment to successfully complete the activity and earn CME credit.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Deploy combination therapeutic regimens—including GLP-1 agonists in combination with basal insulin, and OADs—that, in an individualized manner, to optimize HA1c target goal attainment as outlined in the Year 2012 ADA/EASD Guidelines and Recommendations for T2D Management;
  • Identify patients who, because of postprandial hyperglycemia, are not optimizing overall HA1c target goal attainment; and who, therefore, may be appropriate candidates for therapy with specific agents, including GLP-1 agonists, in combination with basal insulin, to optimize their glycemic management;
  • Titrate the dose(s) of both basal insulin and a GLP-1 agonist, when used in combination, to achieve optimal HA1c control, weight loss, reduction in risk of hypoglycemia, and postprandrial glucose control;
  • Explain the mechanisms, metabolic issues, and physiological rationale for combining anti-hyperglycemic agents—such as basal insulin, that preferentially targets fasting hyperglycemia, in conjunction with agents such as GLP-1 agonists that preferentially target postprandial hyperglycemia—in order to optimize glycemic management and HA1c targets in patients with T2D;
  • Identify T2D patients in whom the possible advantages of incretin system-targeted therapy with GLP-1 agonists—including better PPG control, weight loss, and HA1c reductions— may make them guideline-appropriate candidates for combination regimens
  • Be better able to “individualize” multimodal, pharmacologic management in patients with T2D, and improve patient outcomes by deploying combination regimens that act through multiple, complementary mechanisms—including basal insulin and incretin system-targeted interventions—to achieve ADA/EASD target goals;
